Why Did God Bring This Person Into My Life?

Does Every Relationship Have a Purpose?

We meet countless people in life.
Some bring joy and encouragement, while others leave us frustrated or hurt.

At times, we may find ourselves wondering:
“Why on earth did God send this person into my life?”

Especially when dealing with difficult people, we struggle to decide:

  • Should I continue this relationship?
  • Or should I create distance for my well-being?

The Bible teaches that God uses relationships to shape us, bless others, and protect our faith.

Let’s explore a biblical perspective on relationships and, when necessary, how to prayerfully discern if it’s time to step away.

1️⃣ God Uses Relationships to Shape Us

📖 “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17, ESV)

Sometimes, God allows difficult relationships to refine our character.

God Teaches Us Through People Who Challenge Us:

Annoying people? → An opportunity to develop patience.
People who disappoint us? → A chance to practice forgiveness.
Clashing personalities? → A lesson in humility and self-denial.

Practical Examples:

  • A difficult boss at work? → A lesson in humility and perseverance.
  • A friend who constantly dismisses your opinion? → A chance to root your confidence in God, not people’s approval.
  • Someone at church who tests your patience? → An opportunity to reflect Christ’s love and grace.

Instead of asking “Why is this happening to me?”
Ask: “God, what are You teaching me through this?”

2️⃣ God May Be Using You to Bless Someone Else

📖 “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others.” (Matthew 5:14-16, ESV)

We often think about how people impact us, but what if God is using us to impact them?

Could You Be a Blessing in Someone’s Life?

An unbelieving co-worker constantly seeks your advice? → God may be using you to share the gospel.
A struggling friend confides in you? → Your role might be to listen and pray for them.
A family member going through depression? → They might need your love and encouragement.

Instead of asking “Why do I have to deal with this person?”
Ask: “Lord, how can I be Your hands and feet in this relationship?”

Pray for them.
Show small acts of kindness.
Trust that God placed you in their life for a reason.

3️⃣ God Reveals Important Lessons Through Relationships

📖 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good.” (Romans 8:28, ESV)

Every relationship—whether joyful or painful—carries a lesson from God.

What Might God Be Teaching You?

Have you been betrayed? → Learn to place your trust in God alone.
Dealing with unfair criticism? → Seek God’s approval, not man’s.
Struggling with an unexpected breakup? → Perhaps God is redirecting you to something better.

Sometimes, our biggest spiritual growth comes through the hardest relationships.
Ask: “God, what message are You giving me through this?”

4️⃣ When Should You Step Away from a Relationship?

📖 “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” (Romans 12:18, ESV)

The Bible calls us to seek peace in relationships.
However, that doesn’t mean we must endure every relationship indefinitely.

Key Principles for Discernment:

1) Preserve Love & Peace as Much as Possible

  • Do not cut ties over minor disagreements or personal annoyances.
  • Reconciliation should always be our first response (Matthew 5:44).
  • Forgiveness is a command, even when it’s hard (Romans 12:17).

✅ If a relationship can be restored, pray and make the effort.
🚨 But what if the relationship is spiritually or emotionally harmful?

2) Step Away When It Threatens Your Faith

📖 “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” (2 Corinthians 6:14, ESV)

This verse doesn’t mean we should avoid all unbelievers.
Jesus spent time with sinners to bring them to salvation (Matthew 9:10-13).

🚨 But if a relationship is leading you into sin or compromising your faith, it’s time to step away.

Examples of harmful relationships:

  • A friend who pressures you into ungodly behaviour.
  • A relationship that weakens your faith instead of strengthening it.
  • A toxic community that encourages compromise over conviction.

3) Distance Yourself from Divisive or Harmful People

📖 “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.” (Titus 3:10, ESV)

The Bible warns against those who cause division, spread false teachings, or harm the church.

Examples:

  • Someone constantly stirring up conflict within the church.
  • A person spreading false doctrine that contradicts Scripture.
  • A relationship that drains your joy and pulls you away from God’s calling.

In such cases, walking away is not unloving—it’s biblical wisdom.

4) Avoid Relationships That Encourage Ongoing Sin

📖 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked.” (Psalm 1:1, ESV)

🚨 If someone consistently lives in rebellion against God without repentance, you may need to step back.

Examples:

  • A friend who manipulates or abuses others.
  • A partner who leads you away from God’s truth.
  • A toxic person who thrives on deception or destruction.

📖 “Have nothing to do with such people.” (2 Timothy 3:5, ESV)

In such situations, love them from a distance and pray for their transformation.

Final Thoughts: Every Relationship Has a Purpose

Relationships Are Not Random—They Are Part of God’s Plan.

God uses people to refine and grow us.
We may be someone else’s blessing.
Every encounter carries a lesson from God.
Some relationships are meant to be pruned for spiritual health.

Ask yourself:
“What is God teaching me through this person?”
“How can I show God’s love in this relationship?”
“Is this a relationship I should nurture or step away from?”

Pray for wisdom, trust God’s guidance, and always seek His will in your relationships.

📖 “God makes no mistakes—every encounter has a purpose.”
