If your child asks this question, how would you respond?
Saying, “To get a good job” or “To be successful” might seem like the easiest answer. But is that really what God wants?
From a biblical and Reformed perspective, studying isn’t just a means to an end. It’s deeply connected to our purpose as God’s people—to glorify Him, serve others, and expand His kingdom.
So why should Christians study? Let’s explore what the Bible says.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks a fundamental question:
“What is the chief end of man?”
“Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.”
God has given each of us unique talents and opportunities.
👉 Studying isn’t just about getting good grades; it’s a way to develop our God-given abilities so we can glorify Him.
📖 Matthew 25:14-30 – The Parable of the Talents
In this parable, Jesus teaches that we must use and grow what God has entrusted to us. Those who invest and develop their talents are rewarded, while those who do nothing with them face judgment.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.” (Matthew 25:21, ESV)
Studying is one way we steward the gifts God has given us.
“By studying, you develop the talents God has given you. And when you use them well, He will entrust you with greater things.”
Many kids wonder why they need to study subjects like science or history when they already believe in God. But God calls us to understand and care for His creation.
📖 Genesis 1:28 – The Cultural Mandate
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (ESV)
God designed the world with order, beauty, and purpose.
📖 Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (ESV)
By studying, we get to know more about God through His creation.
“Math, science, history, and language—all of these help us understand the world God made. Learning is a way of worship!”
Studying isn’t just about personal success—it’s about serving others. The Bible commands us to love God and love our neighbor.
📖 Mark 12:30-31
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (ESV)
The more we learn, the better we can help others:
Studying equips us to make a difference in the world—not for our own glory, but to reflect God’s love.
“When you study, you’re preparing to serve others and make the world a better place in God’s name.”
Through studying, we discover our calling.
📖 Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (ESV)
Education helps us understand the world, recognize problems, and find ways to bring God’s justice and mercy into every situation.
God often reveals His plans for us through the things we are passionate about.
“Keep learning and praying—God will guide you to the work He has prepared for you.”
Everyone struggles with studying at some point. But God calls us to develop discipline, perseverance, and diligence.
📖 Colossians 3:23
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (ESV)
📖 Proverbs 10:4
“A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” (ESV)
Studying is not just about gaining knowledge—it shapes our character. It teaches us to be patient, responsible, and hardworking.
“When studying gets tough, remember—it’s not just about the results. It’s about becoming the person God created you to be.”
If your child asks, “Why do I have to study?” you can answer with this:
Studying isn’t just about grades or careers.
It’s a way to glorify God, love our neighbors, and live out His purpose for us.
“Studying is a gift from God. If you study faithfully, He will use you in amazing ways!” 😊
